Bae Sung-Suk

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine whether to plan and develop a school-run oral health educational project for seventh grade students. Participants of this study included 240 seven graders from Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. The decayed, missing, filled teeth (DMFT) index was compared to the oral health education participation index. Among the students, 69.6% confirmed having previously received oral health education, as opposed to 30.4% that had no oral health education. The DMFT index for oral health-educated students was 0.86 ¡¾ 1.90, as compared to 1.56 ¡¾ 2.07 for the students who had never received oral health education.
In summary, it seems that oral health education has a direct influence on DMFT index and plays a critical role in childhood dental hygiene and care. Therefore, a systematic oral health educational program should be implemented from middle school onwards.
